Come visit East Matunuck, Rhode Island

As a small child my family has been visiting East Matunuck and we’ve always stayed in the Village at Potter Pond. The world around the park has certainly changed and the rental prices may have gone up a little but it’s still quite refreshing to see these cottages and modular homes sitting exactly where they sat 40 years ago. Aside from some fresh paint and updated interiors visiting the Village is like taking a trip back in time. It’s not unusual to see folks walking around in the salt pond grabbing quahogs with their feet to cook on the grill for dinner just a couple hours later. Unless you are my father who ate them raw dipped in butter. I was never really into seafood, which is as fresh as it gets, but I was always into jumping off the bridge by the old Seagulls Ice Cream Shop (now the famous Matunuck Oyster Bar). We would let the current take us into the salt pond and simply walk to shore and run around to do it again. Even though there are signs posted not to do this anymore I do still enjoy seeing kids jump off the bridge without a care in the world. Just make sure you check for boats passing underneath! We used to have a Boston Whaler that I was allowed to take out with my brother as young as 12 years old. It was funny to see the reactions of people at galilee watching these two little boys come flying through the breakers on a 20 foot Whaler with 90 HP. We had that front end in the air for sure. I’m a little unsure on the age requirements now but the point of taking that stroll down memory lane is to encourage you to plan family vacations like at destinations like East Matunuck where you are forced to talk to each other and enjoy nature as it was intended just like we did many years ago. Enjoy!
